Interface Demography (ID) is the research group on population issues at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). The research group was founded by Em. Prof. Ron Lesthaeghe in 1977. The name “Interface Demography” was introduced in 1991 as part of a governmental program to open up administrative data for scientific research. The name has been used ever since to stress the interface function between academic research and community oriented applied statistics and data-analysis. The interface function illustrates at the same time the cross-disciplinary position of demography at the intersection with many other scientific disciplines.

Embedded in sociological and demographic theory, and with strong connections to epidemiology, geography and history, the research group today conducts research on population issues with a focus on Belgium and Europe. Using state-of-the-art methods, topics such as household formation and fertility, health and mortality and migration are studied. Data are further collected and analysed within the scope of different demographic and socioeconomic surveys in Belgium and Europe.
